How are you celebrating International IPA Day?

I’m going to go out on a limb here and call this one of the best days – ever.

August 4^th marks the first (official) International IPA Day, which will be a day where IPA lovers from around the world can share their love for their favorite style of beer with each other (and the world), via social media.

Founded by social media personalities Ashley V Routson (@TheBeerWench) and Ryan A Ross (@RyanARoss), International IPA Day hopes to be the largest grassroots, social media-based conversation and celebration of my favorite thing – craft beer.

“This is an opportunity for the craft beer culture as a WHOLE to collectively unite and  promote craft beer to those that might not be within the inner walls of our tight knit group,” writes Ashley on her blog.

IPA has a very special place in our hearts here at Harpoon… it truly allowed us to become the brewery we are today.  And that’s why this holiday/celebration is very exciting for us.

We introduced the Harpoon IPA in 1992 as our Summer Seasonal.  In 1992, we were a small and struggling micro-brewery, and hoppy pale ales were starting to be brewed and become popular on the West Coast. That style was not very prevalent on the East Coast and the time and our founders Rich Doyle and Dan Kenary saw an opportunity.  Using hops from the Pacific Northwest, we created our own take on the traditional English-style ale and held our breath.  It quickly took off and became our bestselling beer.

To this day, the IPA is still our flagship product and has become one of the most recognized beers on this side of the Mississippi (and we have YOU to thank for that).

Since we are celebrating our 25^th anniversary this year, it is only makes sense that we are also paying tribute to the Harpoon IPA that we all know and love.  Several Harpooners who were here when Harpoon IPA was first brewed share their stories –and their love for- Harpoon IPA right here…
