Governor Jim Douglas has officially proclaimed August 15, 2009 “Ride to Fight Hunger Day” in the state of Vermont! Thank you for your support, Governor Douglas!

The proclamation, in conjunction with the Harpoon Point to Point, is an awesome example of Vermonters’ dedication to ending the growing problem of hunger in their communities.

Today’s ride will be made by nearly 400 cyclists and will again benefit the Vermont Foodbank. Last year the Harpoon Point to Point raised more than $47,000 for the Vermont Foodbank, which enabled the Foodbank to provide more than 141,000 pounds of food, or 108,461 meals to hungry Vermonters. Cyclists will cover one of three distances, 110 miles, 50 miles, or 25 miles.  All the rides finish at the brewery in Windsor, where fresh beer, food from Vermont Farmers Market, and a celebration will greet them.  It’s an impressive mixture of commitment, physical effort, sacrifice, and goodwill.  Anyone who has done something similar will know the feeling.  It is also very gratifying to see the growth of the event, from a modest start 8 years ago to the “wow, something big is happening!” scale of today.  Lots of hard work by lots of great people have made this possible.

The fundraising for this year’s Point to Point has already eclipsed that mark, but the need is great. You can donate at http://www.firstgiving.com/pointtopoint.
